Building Real Financial Modeling Skills Since 2018

We started because too many people were learning theory without knowing how to apply it. Seven years later, we're still focused on the same thing: teaching financial modeling that works in actual business situations.

How We Got Here

Like most things worth doing, this wasn't planned from the beginning. It evolved from seeing what people actually needed versus what was available.

1
2018

Started Small

Ran the first workshop with eight participants in a borrowed conference room. The focus was straightforward: build models that reflect what happens in real companies, not textbook examples. People seemed to appreciate the practical approach.

2
2020

Adapted Fast

When in-person became impossible, we rebuilt everything for remote delivery. Turned out people liked learning from home anyway. Participation jumped because geography stopped mattering. We kept the format even after restrictions lifted.

3
2022

Expanded Content

Added specialized tracks based on what participants kept asking about: scenario analysis, sensitivity testing, presentation techniques. Built a library of case studies from actual projects—anonymized, obviously, but reflecting genuine complexity.

4
2024

Refined Approach

Started working with corporate groups needing custom training for their teams. This pushed us to develop more flexible program structures. Good challenge—made everything better for individual learners too.

5
2025 & Beyond

What's Next

Planning advanced certification programs for autumn 2025. Also developing industry-specific content for healthcare and renewable energy sectors. Same core philosophy, just more ways to apply it where it matters.

Numbers That Mean Something

These aren't vanity metrics. They represent time, effort, and improvement that actually happened.

Why We Focus on Application

Here's what we noticed early on: plenty of people knew formulas but couldn't build a model someone else could use. They'd create these elaborate spreadsheets that only made sense to them.

That's not particularly useful in a business context. So we designed programs around building models that need to communicate clearly, handle changes without breaking, and make assumptions visible to whoever reviews them.

Turns out that's what most workplaces actually need. The fancy techniques matter less than building something reliable that serves its purpose.

Who Teaches This

Small team, deliberate approach. We focus on teaching rather than scaling indefinitely.

Ingrid Solvang, Lead Instructor at velorimixa

Ingrid Solvang

Lead Instructor & Founder

Spent twelve years building financial models for infrastructure projects before starting velorimixa. Worked with three of the Big Four firms and led financial planning for two mid-size corporates. Started teaching because I was tired of fixing models that shouldn't have been broken in the first place. Still do occasional consulting work, which keeps the teaching grounded in current practice.

Finding What Fits Your Situation

Different backgrounds need different approaches. Here's how to think about where you might fit.

?

Just Starting Out

  • You understand Excel basics but haven't built financial models
  • Looking for structured introduction with guided practice
  • Need to develop foundation before tackling complex projects
  • Foundation course starting October 2025 covers essentials
!

Have Some Experience

  • You've built models but want to improve structure and efficiency
  • Need techniques for scenario analysis and sensitivity testing
  • Looking to standardize your approach across different projects
  • Intermediate track focuses on refinement and advanced techniques

Corporate Training Needs

  • Your team needs consistent modeling standards and practices
  • Want training tailored to your specific industry context
  • Looking for flexible scheduling around business commitments
  • Custom programs adapt to your requirements and timeline

What Actually Happens in Programs

Most sessions run two hours, twice weekly. You work on building models during class, not just watching demonstrations. We use real business scenarios—merger analysis, capital budgeting, operational forecasting—adapted from actual projects.

Between sessions, you apply techniques to practice assignments. Feedback happens through detailed review, not just grades. The goal is understanding why certain approaches work better in specific contexts.

Group sizes stay below twenty participants. Larger groups make it harder to address individual questions and provide meaningful feedback on work.

Common Questions We Get

Based on conversations with hundreds of potential participants over the years.

Do I need accounting knowledge?

Basic understanding helps but isn't required for foundation programs. We cover relevant concepts as they come up. For advanced programs, you should be comfortable reading financial statements.

What software do you use?

Excel remains the standard across most organizations, so that's what we teach. The principles apply to other platforms, but Excel is what you'll likely use at work. We work with versions from 2016 onwards.

How current is the content?

Programs get updated twice yearly based on participant feedback and changes in business practice. Case studies reflect current market conditions and regulatory requirements relevant to Australian contexts.

Advanced financial modeling techniques and analysis methods

The Technical Side

Programs cover formula construction, error checking, documentation standards, assumption management, and presentation formatting. We spend considerable time on building models that handle changes gracefully—because assumptions always change.

Advanced sessions get into Monte Carlo simulation, three-statement integration, and building dashboards for executive presentation. But only after you're solid on fundamentals.

Everything builds progressively. You don't jump to complex scenarios until basic structure is second nature.

After You Finish

Access to course materials stays active for twelve months after completion. People often reference examples when starting new projects at work. We update the library regularly, so you get new case studies as they're developed.

Alumni sessions run quarterly—optional deep dives into specific topics based on what people request. Recent ones covered renewable energy project modeling and healthcare cost analysis.

You can also reach out with questions on specific projects you're working on. Within reason—we're not doing your work for you, but we'll help if you're stuck on an approach.
